What can CMOs learn from teachers?
I’ve been thinking about this.
Did you know that Crossing the Chasm author Geoffrey Moore was a teacher earlier in his career?
You probably know of other leaders in your network that started out in teaching and made the switch. I don’t think it’s a coincidence.
As is the case with great leaders, teachers are fundamentally vested in the development of their teams/students.
Teachers are skilled communicators. They articulate well, and can inspire.
As a marketing leader, especially in emerging fields, we’re often not just promoting the business. We’re also investing a lot in educating audiences. We’re creating the category, or clearly differentiating our business in a busy marketplace.
And successful CMOs are often lifelong learners themselves, can quickly step into the role of student. They understand the value of pushing themselves strategically and acquiring new skills.
What do you think? Do you see the ‘teacher’ in a leader you admire?
